Talk Like a Pirate Day

piratesAhoy me hearties! Arrgh….. Today is Talk Like a Pirate Day and on my birthday! How cool is that!

I didn’t believe it at first, either. I mean, really, talk like a pirate day?

A quick Google search and sure enough, there it was.

Apparently, it was started back in 1995 by two guys on a racquetball court. Who would have thought?

Here’s the link to their story on CNN: National Talk Like a Pirate Day

It’s no secret around my house that I absolutely LOVE the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. We have all three, can’t wait for the next one, and I think I’ve watched them a hundred times each. The ride at Walt Disney World is an absolute must.

So, how does one talk like a pirate? It’s really easy with pirate lingo.

Here are a few phrases to try on your family and neighbors.

Addled — Mad, insane, or just stupid. An “addlepate” is a fool.
Aft — Short for “after.” Toward the rear of the ship.
Ahoy — “Hello!”
Avast! — “Hey!” Could be used as “Stop that!” or “Who goes there?”
Begad! — By God!
Belay — Stop that. “Belay that talk!” would mean “Shut up!”
Cap’n — Short for “captain.”
Davy Jones’ locker — The bottom of the sea.
Dead men tell no tales – Standard pirate excuse for leaving no survivors.
Me hearties — Typical way for a pirate leader to address his crew.
Matey — A piratical way to address someone in a cheerful, if not necessarily friendly, fashion.
Piece of eight — A Spanish silver coin worth one peso or 8 reales.
Weigh anchor – To haul the anchor up; more generally, to leave port.
Yo-ho-ho – A very piratical thing to say, whether it actually means anything or no

I don’t have any pirate stuff other than a number of years ago, I had to wear a patch on my eye, for a day, as I had scratched it in my sleep.

I’m not expecting Johnny Depp to show up and wish me a happy birthday, although it would be kind of cool. Maybe I’ll dress up as a girl pirate for Halloween this year. That would be fun!

In the meantime, enjoy the pirates below and have a fantastic weekend!
